Spending a day cleaning the house is never at the top of anyone’s “want to do” list, but it needs to get done. Cleaning seems to be a never ending cycle. No one is ever expecting you to have an immaculate home, but it’s easy to find a nice balance. Some dust in the corner or a streaky window won’t make a big difference, but there are a few bad cleaning habits it’s time to break.
More than ever, we’re spending more of our time at home and indoors. This might be the best time to try and see if changing your routine can make a difference.
Forgetting Your Vents and HVAC Filters
One of the things we see the most is homeowners forgetting to clean their HVAC vents. We understand vents can be precarious to reach—oftentimes they’re on the baseboards or at the top of a wall. However, the next time you have your vacuum out, don’t forget to go over your vents.
Another great way of taking care of your indoor air quality is to regularly check your air filter. We’ve shared the consequences of not changing your air filter before. If you can’t reach your air filter or HVAC system, ask a Bell Brothers technician to check it when they are doing a tune-up, they can let you know if it’s time to get it replaced.
Ignoring Small Plumbing Issues
Your plumbing system is a complex maze of pipes. When you see a small problem in your home, like a leaky faucet or slow draining sink, it could indicate a much bigger problem. At Bell Brothers, one of our favorite sayings is an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. If you see a plumbing problem, no matter how small, it’s time to bring in the experts to make sure it’s not something too big.
Incorrectly Cleaning Windows
We all grew up spraying glass cleaner directly on the window and wiping it down. We’re here to tell you that’s a cleaning habit it’s time to break. Unfortunately, this easy window cleaning method does not work with double pane windows. When liquid cleaner is sprayed directly onto glass, it can pool at the bottom of the window frame. Liquid left too long at the base of the window can work its way between the window and seal.
Instead, try spraying glass cleaner directly onto a cloth and rub it on the window’s surface. Additionally, we recommend against using paper towels or other papers to clean your windows. While these are effective at cleaning, paper products can leave a fibrous residue
around window corners, on hardware, and in streaks on the glass.
Dusting, Should This Only Be Done Last?
Most people leave dusting for very last. One of the best ways we’ve found to clean a room is to start by dusting first and last; and start at the top and work your way down. If you start by dusting at the top of the room, everything will fall and settle at the bottom. Once you’re done cleaning the top, just dust and vacuum the lower half of the room.
