It’s Not Just the Sink – Other Thanksgiving Plumbing Problems

It’s Not Just the Sink – Other Thanksgiving Plumbing Problems

Thanksgiving Plumbing ProblemsAs you already know, taking care of your sink and drains is key to having a stress-free Thanksgiving, but what about the rest of your plumbing? There are countless other things that can go wrong with your plumbing. We’re sharing other Thanksgiving plumbing problems you may want to watch out for.

Don’t Run the Garbage Disposal and Dishwasher at the Same Time

When it comes to clean up, most people try to be as efficient as possible. We understand that less time washing dishes means more time prepping dessert or spending time with your family. Despite this, it’s important to make sure you don’t run the garbage disposal and dishwasher at the same time. Many homeowners don’t realize that the garbage disposal and dishwasher share the same drain. So, using them both at the same time could lead to a traffic jam. Sometimes if the dishwasher and disposal are running at the same time, food scraps from the disposal can end up all over your nice, clean dishes. Keep your dishes safe and be sure to run everything separately.

Flushable Wipes Aren’t Meant to Be Flushed

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: “flushable” wipes should not be flushed. Though many brands say their wipes are flushable, the truth is these wipes do not break down in water. Instead they can get caught on existing backups or cause a clog. When a wipe or cloth is described as flushable, it means the debris can make it down of your toilet, but only to then be stuck in your pipes.

Give Your Shower a Break

While most of our post-Thanksgiving calls are about kitchen concerns, we often hear from homeowners who want us to take a look at their water heater? If you’re asking why, the answer is that the water heater is often pushed past its limits on holidays. Excessive showers can be demanding on a home’s plumbing system. Back to back showers, or a shower being used at the same time as the dishwasher mean you’ll quickly run out of hot water, unless you have a tankless water heater. It’s best to let your plumbing take a 15-minute break between showers and other water heavy tasks.

Don’t Attempt to DIY

Though there may be a YouTube video for everything under the sun, we’re asking that you call a plumber instead of searching for DIY plumbing videos. Trust us when we say that Thanksgiving Day is not the time to teach yourself how to unclog a drain or toilet. Put down the toolkit and call a professional plumber. We’ve seen homeowners make small problems worse by trying to fix it themselves. We do have some resources for cleaning your drains at home but leave anything and everything else to the professionals at Bell Brothers.

Have Everything Checked out Before Thanksgiving

For a stress-free holiday, we recommend booking a plumbing maintenance inspection as preventative maintenance. During a plumbing maintenance inspection, one of our expert plumbers will come to your home and thoroughly examine all parts of your plumbing and check for any problems.
