Is it Better to Repair or Replace Your Windows?
Traditionally, replacing windows was an easy task. All you would need is one pane of glass and a quick switch from your old wood frame. Nowadays, our clients have many more options and the question becomes, should I repair, or replace my windows? While most homeowners would say repair, it can actually be more cost effective to replace. We can’t tell you exactly what to do, but we can offer information that can help guide you in the best direction.
Reasons to Replace Windows
When it comes to windows, there are a few scenarios in which we recommend replacement. Here are situations when replacement is the best, and sometimes only, option:
- Broken Seals – One of the more common reasons we see homeowners replacing their windows is because of a broken seal. If you have double pane windows and see condensation between the glass, that’s a sign of a broken seal. Modern windows usually consist of two glass panes with a small air space in between and a rubber seal around the entire thing. When the seal is broken, it will only get worse. The only option is to replace the window.
- Broken Panes – Broken windows happen, we understand. It’s the most common window call we receive at Bell Brothers. Don’t live with a crack in the glass, replace that window as soon as possible. While it is possible to repair a broken windowpane, in some cases it’s can actually be more cost effective to replace the whole thing.
- Drafty Windows – Do you ever close a window, but still feel outdoor air seeping in? If the answer is yes, it’s time to replace your windows. If you have double pane windows, draftiness is a sign that the seal could be broken. In older homes, draftiness could be caused by wood rot, loosened sashes, or old weather stripping. Either way, when the outside air is getting inside despite the closed windows, it’s time to replace them.
Take a Peek at New Window Materials
We like talking to homeowners about window replacement because materials have grown exponentially better over time. Years ago, the only option you had were wood windows, now we offer vinyl. One thing we love about vinyl is its smooth surface and bold appearance. This is the type of window that makes a statement. Another reason we recommend vinyl is because the material offers amazing insulation that will keep your home cool during the warmest of summer months and cozy in the dead of winter.
