My AC is Blowing Warm Air. Now What?
If there’s anything we can all agree on, it’s that summers in Central California are hot. For some of our vulnerable populations, a working AC can make a huge impact on their health. But what happens when you turn on your AC and only feel warm air? If you’re worried about this situation, don’t be, there are things you can do to prevent it from happening. If you want to learn why your AC is blowing warm air and what you can do about it, this post is for you.
Faulty Thermostat
If you ever turn on your AC and it’s blowing warm air, the first thing you should check is the thermostat. The thermostat is like a remote control for your HVAC system, if it’s not working correctly, the whole thing may not be responsive. First, check to see if the settings are off or need adjustment. Second, turn it off and turn it back on again. Sometimes a restart is all the thermostat needs to work again. A final and easy solution could be to change out the batteries.
Low Refrigerant Levels
Refrigerant is the lifeblood of an AC system. It is a liquid agent that cools and dehumidifies the air, without refrigerant, an AC unit is unable to do its job properly. As a part of our 26-point tune-up inspection, a highly trained Bell Brothers technician will check your refrigerant levels to ensure your system has a sufficient amount. Not having enough refrigerant can cause your system to blow warm air. If your system is running low on refrigerant, the technician will be able to top it off or offer you repair solutions if there is an underlying problem. If you’ve had a tune-up and your AC is still blowing warm air, this could be an indication of a leak in the refrigerant line. Either way, it’s important you call a Bell Brothers technician to the scene. Refrigerant is a dangerous chemical and should only be used by professionals.
Issues with the Circuit Board
HVAC systems require a lot of energy to run. This is why your bills can fluctuate during peak heating and cooling season. A reason you may feel your AC blowing warm air is because something in the circuit board may be malfunctioning. Sometimes, a circuit board is unable to handle the amount of power required by your HVAC system. If this is the case, your system can shut itself off which could be a reason your AC is blowing warm air.
Dirty Condenser Coil
Your central AC system has two coils. One is outside, inside the condenser and the other is inside with the rest of the HVAC system. Your condenser coil is found in the outside unit and after treating your air, it releases the heat into the atmosphere and pushes cool air into your home. Since the condenser is outside, it can easily get dirty between dirt, plant debris, and other biological materials. If you suspect the warm air inside your home might be a product of a dirty condenser coil, schedule an appointment with one of our expertly trained HVAC techs. They’ll provide a thorough cleaning and inspection to ensure your condenser is in excellent working order.
Dirty Evaporator Coil
The evaporator coil is located inside your attic or closet HVAC unit, right next to the air filter. At Bell Brothers, we stress the importance of regularly changing your air filter. One of the many reasons this is important is because any air that goes through your air filter also passes through the evaporator coil. If your air filter is dirty, that dirty air is settling into your evaporator coil ,which can lead to issues in circulating air. The settled dust and debris can cause such a backup that cold air is unable to break through, causing your home to only receive warm air. A comprehensive cleaning from a Bell Brothers technician can help alleviate this problem.
