Prepare Your Home for a Sacramento Winter

Prepare Your Home for a Sacramento Winter

Prepare Home For WinterThere’s a reason the rest of the country wishes they lived in California during the winter. It’s true, our winters are mostly mild; despite this, the weather does take a toll on your home. If a home isn’t properly winterized–even in Sacramento–cold temperatures, rain showers, and the occasional freeze can do some serious damage. Here are the best things you can do to prepare your home for winter.

Prepare Your Home for Winter and Schedule a Furnace Tune-Up

Perhaps one of the most important things you can do to prepare your home for winter is to schedule a furnace tune-up. During our 18-point furnace tune-up and professional inspection, a Bell Brothers technician will look at every component of your system and let you know of any small issues. We believe in fixing small issues before they become big nightmares.

Inspect Your Roof

While we don’t see snow or sleet in Sacramento, we do see lots of rain during the winter. Because of this, it’s critical you check your roof to make sure nothing is out of place and clean of all debris. All you need to do is a visual inspection. If there are any shingles out of place or worn seals, we recommend replacing these as soon as possible. If you don’t feel comfortable doing this on your own, a professional can come out and inspect everything for you.

Clear Your Gutters and Downspouts

After you’ve checked the roof for debris and any other issues, the next thing to check are your gutters and downspouts. As we’ve mentioned before, Sacramento’s winter weather consists of rain. You don’t want rainwater building up and potentially leak into your attic, damage siding, and weakening windows. This is why it’s critical to clean your gutters and downspouts before the rainy season hits.

Clean Your Window Tracks

An easy way to prepare for winter is to clean your window tracks. If you have vinyl or fiberglass windows, chances are they have a “weep hole.” This little hole helps rainwater drain out of your window track. Over time, dirt and other debris can clog the hole. All you need to do is thoroughly clean the tracks and you’re ready for rain.

Replace All the Batteries

One of our favorite things about winter is how cozy we can get with a fire, space heater, or central heating system. The tradeoff however, is a greater risk of fire and carbon monoxide poisoning. Before kicking on the heater full time, do a sweep of your home and make sure to update batteries in all smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. A little safety check can go a long way.

Prepare Your Home for Winter by Checking Interior and Exterior Lights

Since it’s starting to get dark much earlier, a great way to prepare your home for winter is to check both your interior and exterior lights. No one wants to be caught off guard by a burned out bulb when they get home from work and need to see their way in.
