The furnace in your home includes a filter that traps dust, dirt, and bacteria that otherwise would enter the furnace and exit out the duct into the home’s air. The filter eventually becomes clogged when it fills up with these harmful particles. A dirty filter degrades the efficiency of the furnace. A clean filter helps keep your furnace running at its best all the time.

When a furnace runs with a clogged filter, it may take it longer to heat the air in the home to the desired temperature. This can cause unnecessary wear and tear on your furnace. Replacing the motor can be very costly and more often than not, it will go out when you need it the most. If you cannot replace the motor yourself, you will need to hire someone who can. This filter-related untimely replacement can be avoided by changing the filter every month.

If you have not changed your furnace filter before and are wondering what is involved, please read these basic tips to help you locate and replace the filter.

  1. Turn your furnace off before working on it. Even though the filter does not involve anything electrical, you want to be safe and turn it off first. Be aware of any electrical wires that may be near the filter on the inside.
  2. Write the size of the filter down on a note pad, or take the filter with you to the store. It can be very frustrating to stare at multiple filter types and sizes while trying to remember what exactly to buy.
  3. When replacing the filter, find the arrow located on the frame of the filter. The arrow will help you to slide the filter in the proper way. Also, note which side is the ‘top’ on the old filter so you can correctly place the new one.

Filters are fairly inexpensive and can be purchased at almost any home improvement center. It is advisable to buy several filters at one time. This will ensure you always have one on hand to use when needed.
